Obsidian is built on a local-first, plain-text Markdown architecture that stores all notes in user-owned vaults on disk. It exposes an open plugin API (TypeScript/JavaScript) that lets developers build and distribute community plugins — popular ones include Dataview (SQL-like queries over notes), Kanban, Tasks, and Calendar. The app ships on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with an optional end-to-end encrypted Sync service and a CLI for automation. Obsidian Publish converts vault content into fast, SEO-optimized static sites with custom domains and theming, powered directly from the app. A Web Clipper browser extension allows capturing web content directly into vaults.
