Khanmigo is built on GPT-4 (OpenAI), customized with Khan Academy's proprietary educational guardrails and content integrations.
The AI is deeply embedded within Khan Academy's learning platform, giving it direct access to curriculum-aligned content across subjects and grade levels.

Access Control & Safety Architecture:

Student access (under 18) is restricted to two pathways: parent-managed accounts (up to 10 children per subscription) or district-level implementations facilitated by Khan Academy's partnership program.
Individual teachers cannot directly grant student access — this design enforces a supervised, compliant environment for minors.
All student data is handled with privacy and security guarantees appropriate for K–12 educational settings (COPPA/FERPA considerations implied by nonprofit education focus).

Teacher Tool Capabilities:

Standards-aligned lesson plan generation tied to Khan Academy's content library.
On-demand student progress summaries for quick formative assessment.
Automated creation of rubrics, quiz questions, learning objectives, hooks, exit tickets, and student groupings.
No API access is publicly documented; Khanmigo is a closed, hosted platform.

Geographic Restrictions:

Parent/learner subscriptions require a U.S. billing address.
Teacher access is available in a broader set of supported countries and territories.
