Technical Character Configuration
Character.AI does not expose a public API, but developers and power users can leverage the Character creation interface to fine-tune persona behavior:
- Character Definition Fields:
Name,Greeting(opening message),Short Description(tagline shown in search),Long Description(system-level persona instructions), andExample Dialogues(few-shot conversation samples to shape tone and style). - Example Dialogue Format: Uses a
{{char}}/{{user}}placeholder syntax to define expected conversational patterns, effectively acting as few-shot prompt conditioning. - Voice Feature: Characters can be assigned a voice from a preset library, enabled via the character editor, delivering text-to-speech output during chats.
- Visibility Controls: Characters can be set to
Public,Unlisted, orPrivate. Unlisted characters are accessible via direct link only. - Unofficial API / SDKs: Community-maintained libraries (e.g.,
PyCharacterAIon PyPI) reverse-engineer session-based endpoints, but these are unsupported and subject to breaking changes. - Platform Limits: Free-tier users may encounter response throttling during peak hours; c.ai+ subscribers receive priority queue access.
